Have an awesome summer! - Kayla M. aka @kaylamackaylaThe Jamaica Road Safety Council was created on April 25, 1954 after the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation ran a campaign asking the public for their suggestions to help with traffic laws in Jamaica. The council was created with a goal of reducing road accidents and fatalities in Jamaica. They did this by making a list of the most important traffic laws and publishing them into a book form for people to be able to read it. The book was published on August 5, 1955. A new version of the book is published every five years. It contains information about speed limits, pedestrian crossing rules, rules about drinking alcohol and driving, road signs etc.. The J.I.C.A. has conducted extensive research on the child pedestrian safety in Jamaica. The organization dedicated its efforts to improving pedestrian safety by issuing walking safety books for children and adults, working to improve road safety signage, and redesigning roads for safer walking, biking, or jogging conditions. The J.I.C.A.'s attempts to improve the country's road safety resonated with international organizations such as UNICEF and UNAIDS . Later on after UNICEF recommended that all countries should integrate traffic safety measures into their child development programs, the JICA introduced it's programme within education programmes in many countries including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka , Myanmar , Nepal , Solomon Islands etc.. The last five-year revision of the J.I.C.A. road safety book was published in August 2015, and is available in various Jamaican government ministries, councils and agencies. The program remains popular among Jamaicans who use the safety recommendations to improve road safety for themselves and their children . http://www.jica.go.jp/public/english/programme/road_safetyThe Jamaica Road Code is a set of traffic laws in Jamaica that was first published in 1955 by The Jamaica Road Safety Council (JICCA). It is updated every five years. The manual manual is in both English and JIS format, however the English version is more widely used in official circles. The original book contained many of the same rules as other former British colonies, but also included new penalties for driving without a license. The code was phased out after independence due to an increase in road accidents , though it was later reinstated with amendments. The last version of the code came out in 2005.
As Jamaican roads are dangerous, many people have died because of accidents, some at the hands of other drivers, some run over by trains etc..
